How To French Press Coffee?

2026-07-30

French Press coffee is prepared by steeping coarse ground coffee directly in hot water and separating it with a metal filter. The method produces a full-bodied cup because coffee oils and fine flavor compounds are not removed by a paper filter.

A reliable starting recipe is 1 part coffee to 15 parts water, followed by about four minutes of immersion.

Prepare the Coffee and Water

For a 600 ml French press, begin with approximately 40 g of coffee. Adjust the amount according to taste and the usable volume of the press.

Use a coarse, even grind. Fine coffee can pass through the filter and create excessive sediment. It can also make the plunger difficult to press.

Heat fresh water and allow it to settle briefly after boiling. Water that is too cool may produce weak extraction, while prolonged boiling can reduce control over the brew.

Preheating a stainless steel or glass press with hot water can reduce temperature loss during brewing.

Add Water Evenly

Place the coffee grounds in the empty press.

Pour enough water to wet the complete coffee bed, then continue adding the remaining water steadily. Stir gently to ensure that no dry grounds remain above the surface.

Place the lid on top, but keep the plunger raised.

Do not press immediately. The grounds need sufficient contact time with the water before filtration.

Steep and Press

Allow the coffee to steep for approximately four minutes.

Press the plunger downward slowly with steady pressure. Forcing it quickly can disturb the grounds, increase sediment, or cause hot coffee to move upward around the filter.

When the plunger resists strongly, lift it slightly and try again. Excessive resistance often indicates a grind that is too fine or a filter that is not correctly aligned.

Pour the coffee into cups or a serving vessel immediately. Coffee left inside the press continues interacting with the grounds and may become increasingly heavy or bitter.

Adjust the Recipe by Taste

Use the following corrections:

The coffee tastes weak

Increase the coffee dose, grind slightly finer, or confirm that the water is hot enough.

The coffee tastes bitter

Reduce the steep time, use a coarser grind, or select a lighter extraction ratio.

The cup contains too much sediment

Use a more consistent coarse grind and press more slowly.

The coffee cools too quickly

Preheat the press and cups or use a double-wall stainless steel structure.

Keep the water amount stable while testing changes. Adjusting several variables at once makes it difficult to repeat a successful result.

Cleaning the French Press

Remove the grounds soon after brewing.

Do not push a large amount of coffee grounds into the sink because they can collect in the drainage system. Place them in compost or household waste according to local practices.

Separate the filter components when the structure permits it. Wash away trapped grounds with mild detergent and a soft brush.

Dry the press completely before reassembly. Inspect the mesh, central rod, lid, and plunger alignment regularly.

Commercial Grade French Press Selection

Commercial Grade stainless steel French press should be evaluated for capacity, filtration, wall structure, handle stability, lid fit, surface finish, cleaning access, and packaging protection.

Our stainless steel press range includes capacities such as 350 ml, 600 ml, 800 ml, and larger models up to approximately 1.5 L. Available directions include matte finishes and several color choices.

Stainless steel construction is suited to cafés, hotels, offices, catering, household retail, and outdoor use where repeated handling or glass breakage is a concern.

For wholesale and private-label programmes, buyers can discuss:

  • Capacity combinations

  • Single-wall or insulated construction

  • Filter structure

  • Exterior colors

  • Logo placement

  • Individual boxes

  • Coffee tool gift sets

  • Market-specific instructions

Discuss a French Press Product Line

Send us the required capacities, wall structure, surface color, logo, expected order quantity, package design, and intended sales market.

Our team can prepare samples and a commercial quotation for individual presses or coordinated sets with Coffee Kettles, Canisters, and Milk Pitchers. Production, inspection, custom packaging, and repeat-order supply can be planned around the approved model.
